We've updated our post about the February 7th casting call in Philadelphia with specific information as to the time and place, and several local volunteers are helping to organize a protest. If you're interested in joining in, please do so -- the stronger a front we present, the harder it will be for Paramount Pictures to continue to ignore us.
Even if you can't make it to the casting call, you can still raise awareness of this issue in style! One of our supporters, the talented and generous
glockgal, has set up an online store where you can buy shirts, postcards and buttons to broadcast your support of this cause in person. All items are being sold at cost, and none of us will profit from these sales in any way. If you want to make your own shirt or poster, you can download the highres versions of the images here.
While we ultimately decided against handling any money ourselves, we encourage you to donate to the East West Players. From their website: "As the nation’s premier Asian American theatre organization, East West Players produces outstanding works and educational programs that give voice to the Asian Pacific American experience." One of their primary goals is "increased opportunities for Asian Pacific Islander artists on stage and in other media," which is very closely tied to what we're trying to do here. In addition to this, many of the Asian American actors who provided voices for Avatar: The Last Airbender were associated with this group -- including Mako, sadly deceased, who was the voice of Uncle Iroh.

I've decided that if this doesn't work out, some day I want to organize a fanmade film. I'm white (and certainly no actor xD), but I could help with visual effects and video editing. Of course, that's just a crazy idea, and one that should probably wait until I'm in college. But I'm determined to do that if this doesn't succeed.
Until a White guy replaced his role, and nothing substantially registered in protest, either on the internet, or through mainstream press outlets.
We have previously responded to comments regarding the ethnicity of voice actors, but will restate those comments here for your benefit.
You're lending importance to the voice actor that isn't warranted. An animated character is formed by many people -- the voice actor is just one part of what creates their identity, working in collaboration with storyboard artists, designers and animators. Women, for example, play preteen male characters all of the time.
However, in live action films like this one, the actor has to be the character to a much greater degree, and essentially becomes that character to the audience. Daniel Radcliffe IS Harry Potter in a way that Dante Basco will never be Zuko and Zach Tyler Eisen will never be Aang. Bart Simpson is played by a middle-aged woman named Nancy Cartwright, but her face is certainly not what comes to mind when people think of that character.
In regards to the Asian American acting community, a few specific points:
- The television voice acting community is incredibly small, and mostly separate from the larger acting community. There are actually a disproportionate number of actors and actresses of color in that community, many of which are extremely prolific.
- Consider that Prince Zuko, arguably the second-most important character in the show next to Aang, was voiced by Dante Basco -- a Filipino American actor. He's had a very busy voice acting career, including the title character in "Jake Long: American Dragon." Our issue is that Asian American actors aren't allowed to have the spotlight in live action films like this one. Actors like Dante Basco can only be the "star" when we can't see their faces.

"Jesse McCartney will be joining "Twilight" star Jackson Rathbone in the upcoming M. Night Shyamalan-helmed flick "The Last Airbender." McCartney — who plays Prince Zucko — assured fans of the writer/director who feel he may not be right for the part that Shyamalan has it all figured out"
"Although he is still learning all about the popular cartoon that first made its debut in Asia before gaining popularity in America, it was his little brother who was already a fan when McCartney signed on to the flick. "I heard about the series from my little brother who's an avid 'Avatar' fan,"
Get you're facts straight Jesse!!!!!!!!!!
It's sad -- we really do want to leave the actors out of this as much as possible, as they aren't responsible for the casting policy and shouldn't be punished for Paramount's bad decisions. But it's incredibly unfortunate 1) that they continue to make ridiculous and borderline offensive statements in interviews and 2) that Paramount is leaving them hanging out to dry in this way in the first place. Two actors and a casting director are the closest we've gotten to an official statement -- WHY, when things are deteriorating in this way?
Time will tell, perhaps.

'Anyone can be replaced.'
Even if it's on short notice; if something/someone doesn't work out (actors, directors, etc) then they can be easily replaced with someone else. Geneviève Bujold was replaced by Kate Mulgrew for Star Trek: Voyager after the pilot due to the demands of acting for a TV show.
So anyone who's thinking it's too late... remember that.
Zuko??

Is this Aang?

But still...at least the cast won't be whitey mcwhite anymore. :) I'll take my kicks where I can get 'em.
"Native Americans are outraged over what they hold as deceptions in and around the production of the Hollywood film series “Twilight.”
With the commercial success of Twilight, Hollywood is abuzz with agents molding, fitting, and pushing their celebrity actors to pass as Native Americans."

and then the new Zuko

Interesting that this is the directors favorite character and then who he cast as Zuko..very interesting!
i think he wanted to play his uncle
http://www.graffitiverite.com/dante.JPG
PS yes, they should have gone a different route
He seems more suited to play Sokka (for those of you who watch Skins you'll understand what I mean)Is it just me or does it seem that M. Night doesn't "get" Avatar...or someone doesn't "get" Avatar.
Many are saying they are happy that Zuko is not being played by Jesse, but my confidence is still low. Some argue, "Dev is Asian!", which is true. But if you are going to switch gears and recast this very IMPORTANT character wouldn't it be better to try to hit it more on the mark?
At least we know how well this actor can act...
'We won't accept 'tokens'.
Even though I'm sure Dev is a fine actor (judging by 'Slumdog Millionair's' success), it still doesn't behoove well for the production to cast just one Asian into a lead, and an important one at that.
Just thought everyone should know. I wonder, do we have anything to do with it?
The sad thing is
Sokka is white and Suki is Asian.
Goku is white?! Chi Chi is Asian..
The white guy always gets the Asian girl.
Everybody should watch Wong Fu Production's "Yellow Fever."
My guess before Jesse McCartney's recasting was that Mai was going to be Asian as well. But now that's going to be possibly different.
But I just really got to thinking. Many more movies depict the main white hero getting the Asian girl.
James Bond (kinda whatever because no girl is safe from James)
The Last Samurai (the wife of the samurai he kills falls in love with him)
The Forbidden Kingdom(sparrow and jason.. kinda)
Besides that, I started thinking more on the bulls eye. I don't know if these were brought up yet, but I know that you guys somehow realize these things in your mind. Some of which are fairly obvious.
Here it is, Mike and Bryan went to Asia to study everything for the show. ATLA has a lot of turning points that come from history itself.
The Earth king Being so divine that he could not speak to commoners was an example of the Japanese Government in which the voice of the emperor was so pure he could not speak to a commoner. The Emperor under Meiji Constitution did not deal with anything related to government issues, but he did appoint the Prime Minister to handle such things. Just as Long Feng was to the Earth King.
Long Feng kept secrets from The Earth King. Aha a connection indeed. Watch The Last Samurai for the history that it is based on (not for Tom Cruise) and you will see what I mean. (read the summary if you want to speed it up a bit.)
The Great Wall of Ba Sing Se of course is referring to the The Great Wall of China. So it could be assumed the Earth Kingdom is like China. China has been renowned for the wall and its defense. Sounds like Ba Sing Se being a famous defense against invaders. Even Iroh the Dragon of the West had problems with the wall.
Now Japan off the coast of China had tried to conquer China as well. During the events of World War II they began a full invasion. Eventually they conquered the capital Nanjing.
>.> The Fire Nation eventually conquers Ba Sing Se, the CAPITAL of the Earth Kingdom. Hmm.. (B.T.W. the Earth Kingdom emblem looks like a Chinese coin)
Another thing to add, the fighting between the nations and division reminds me of China. Especially how before all the different languages and writing and culture was split up. At the end the whole country united under one ruler and became one.
I was especially reminded of this during the scene Aang is talking to either Gyatso or The Guru. How they showed the different nations in their respective colors but talked about a united world where the nations colors all turned to the same color.
But WAIT! There's still more. The story is heavily based on the fire nation taking over the world. The world based on mainly Asian cultures. This happened in history when Communism began to rise to power. The Vietnam War took place and Vietnam lost. Eventually this would continue to push down toward Cambodia. It began shortly after the fall of Saigon, the capital of Vietnam. This began another battle against the Khmer Rouge.
A symbol of Cambodia is of course Angkor Wat. A temple/monastery of Cambodia. Now look at a picture of a Cambodian monk and Aang. Note the strong orange color, that majority of Asian monks use, but is it a coincidence that the name Aang is similar to ANGkor Wat?
So is the world of avatar really "made up?" This shows how important it is to have the right cast. In extremes this film could represent the Asian country as a whole because of its deep cultural roots. It definitely should be thought about every time someone says that the characters have no race because the world of Avatar doesn't exist, unless you want to deny my culture and forefathers considering I am living flesh and example of my country.
sorry, Didn't know where else to post this but I wanted those that are protesting to get a good feel of the history. =] I hope it helps.
People who got fliers:
During my Takashi Miike signing, I gave him one of the fliers. He will have his translator read it later to him but he reacted positively to the hand out. He was so surprised of my Japanese!
Likewise, the two leads of Platinum Games for Madworld also got two fliers and seemed grateful. I am sorry, I only remember one name, the project director .
The big hit was at the Asian America panel. Lots of people showed up and reacted very positively to it, including people who attended of all types. Turns out one guy knows us really well and blogged about the casting, Keith Chow. I have his contact info. If you like to thank him, message me for it since I am worried if I post it publicly he will get harassed.
I recorded the end part to his panel were he spoke about the Avatar casting. I will upload it soon. He took many many hand outs because he is going to give them to all of his friends, co-workers and the other Asian American artist and the con. So less work for me!
I sadly could not give Milo his in person, but I manage to use my contact info and charm to find one of his aids, who put the pamphlet into Milo's memo area so he can read it later.
Finally, I put posters around the con and distribute more fliers. Many people were attracted to them, especially around the escalator. Two were torn down sadly. All the handouts went fast and people kept them. Very positive reactions.
The only bad news is that there was suppose to be some kind of Avatar fan meeting today, but I missed it I guess. I dunno where it was and the person I gave my card to did not call me! ;,;
Tomorrow I will do this again, especially with the kids coming in. I hope to meet Keith again since he is hosting another panel about Multicultural Facades in the media.
Tired but excited, I hope I did ok.
Though I didn't hear anything about an Avatar panel of any kind. I watch a number of people on dA who are at NYCC, so I would've thought I'd have heard. Not to mention nothing on ASN. Then again, they've yet to have said anything on the casting, even from a neutral perspective on their news, so I don't know.

I will have a YouTube one up later today.
I could not get Daniel Dae Kim one in person, but like with Milo, I found one of his aids and gave it to her, and I saw it give it to him. He got it, looked at it, folded it and put it in his pocket. I would like to call that one success.
I hand out so many but the two that I now names of 100% that are fully behind us are Perry Moore (writer of the best selling book "Hero") and Misako Rocks! (A very awesome manga-ken) There was also a major woman from DC that was friends with Perry Moore but I sadly cannot remember her name. :(
Anyhow, I have pictures of them for you guys to see. It was a fun con. I hope this gets the word out.
A woman who works at the higher ups at DC Comics. I really have to find out what her name was! Sorry!
